Anti-Slip paints have their uses – but NOT on stairs and ramps.

Worse, after a very short time it actually makes the slip problem worse than it was in the first place.

In short, the grit in the paint very soon falls out and/or crushes to powder leaving a smooth, slippery painted surface right where more anti-slip grip is needed.

Paint on Stairs 2Able-bodied people walk down stairs with their foot contacting only the very front of the stair tread. Foot contact is made about under the ball of the big toe and with the foot tilted forward, like this:

What this does is set up a strong shear force, down and forward, that simply pops any grit out of the thin paint and leaving a smooth painted surface. As the paint quickly wears with traffic this problem gets worse. Using soft grits like sand, quartz or crushed glass presents the added problem that the grit breaks and crushes and becomes useless.

 So, the leading edge of the tread does all the work as far as anti-slip goes, and the rest of the tread does very little – well, it contributes a little when walking up the stairs. We call this front edge the Critical Edge at that is where really tough, purpose made non-slip material is needed.

A secondary problem at the critical edge is overstepping.

This is when a painted stair has very poor definition between the treads, and the steps appear more as a ramp and it is easy to mis-judge, overstep the tread and fall forward. It looks like this –

Marking a strip on the front edge of each tread will break up this ramp effect and prevent overstepping.

Plain to see that all the action happens at the critical edge, right at the front of each stair tread, we need to get high-traction anti-slip right there as well as a contrasting coloured line to differentiate each tread and prevent over stepping. This is the sort of result we need:

If you try to achieve this result with paint and grit coating applied as a strip at the leading edge of each tread then you will need to re-visit and re-apply the paint coating very frequently. Expensive, time consuming and ultimately with very poor effect.
